DERMABRASION

This procedure is designed to smooth either the whole face or just a portion of it. Dermabrasion allows smoother younger looking skin to form.  If you are considering dermabrasion, the following information will give you a good introduction to the procedure.
$300.00 per segment

What will happen at the initial consultation?
On your first visit, your surgeon will discuss with you the changes that are to be made in your appearance.  The procedure itself will be explained to you, as well as limitations and risks.  You may ask to be shown before and after photos of other patients who have undergone the procedure.  Ask all questions you may have of the procedure.

How is the procedure performed?
When your face is numb; a controlled mechanical scraping of the skin is done using a high-speed rotary wheel to soften surface irregularities including acne and other scars and fine wrinkles, especially around the mouth.

How long does it take?
This procedure usually takes 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on the size and condition of the area to be treated.  If the skin to be treated is in severe condition you may need another session to complete the treatment.  This procedure is done using general or local anesthesia with sedation.

Will I need to stay in the hospital?
Dermabrasion is a fairly quick procedure and can be done in the office surgical suite.

How much pain is there?
Some bleeding may occur, but there is not much pain since the procedure is done using anesthesia.

What is to be expected after the procedure?
A few days after the procedure, you will feel your skin had been scraped just as in a fall. A scab will form over the treated area within 24 to 48 hours after the procedure.  You may also experience some swelling for the first few days but this may be eased by oral medication.

What is recovery period like?
After several days, the outer layer of the skin including the scabbing will fall off.  When this happens your skin will be a bit reddish but it disappears in a few weeks.  You may be able to go to work within a few days of the procedure although your skin may still be red and sore.  Men are advised to avoid shaving at this time and you should also avoid exposure to sunlight.

How long do results last?
Results for this procedure are permanent.  Those who have undergone this procedure are satisfied with the results.  This procedure can turn back the hands of time by making you look younger but this will not stop the aging process.  You may still form wrinkles as you age.

What are the risks to this kind of procedure?
You may have abnormal color changes in your skin.  Tiny whiteheads may form but are temporary.  Infection may set in; also excessive scarring may occur.  A flare-up of skin allergies, fever, blisters and cold sores is a possibility.

Are there any side effects?
There will be temporary tingling and burning, itching, swelling and redness.  Lightening of the treated skin and acute sensitivity to sunlight.  There may be a loss of the ability to make a pigment (tan).

Am I an ideal candidate?
You are if you are in good physical health, aware of the process involved, free of active acne, have not had previous chemical peel, severe sunburn or radiation treatment.
