WHAT ARE MEDICAL FACIALS?

Medical facials address many of the most common cosmetic concerns, such as anti-aging, acne, irregular pigmentation and redness. Medical facials, also known as chemical peels, use special skin treatment chemicals that penetrate your skin at different levels, depending on the type of peel that is recommended.

BENEFITS OF A MEDICAL FACIAL

A medical facial removes the damaged layers of your skin. Your body then generates new skin that is free of flaws. For some patients, medical facials are excellent alternatives to surgery, injectables and fillers. We may recommend a medical facial in conjunction with other treatments.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR A MEDICAL FACIAL?

The best way to find out if you are a good candidate for a medical facial is to call our office and schedule a consultation appointment. Our skin care specialists examine your skin and help you define realistic expectations for your cosmetic procedures.

THE MEDICAL FACIAL PROCEDURE

Medical facials are performed at three levels — light, medium and deep, depending on the type and extent of correction. Light chemical peels require little to no downtime and healing is generally short. A chemical solution of glycolic or salicylic acid is applied to your skin. The solution remains on your skin for up to 10 minutes, and you may experience a mild tingling during the treatment. A neutralizing solution is then applied, and your skin is cleansed. You start to see new skin in three to seven days after your light medical facial.

Medium medical facials use trichloroacetic acid and glycolic acid. The solution remains on your skin for up to 20 minutes, and cool compresses are applied to your skin. You may experience some stinging during the treatment. Your skin may be red and swollen, and new skin typically takes five to seven days to develop. The redness may last for several months.

Carbolic acid is used for deep medical facials, and the solution is typically applied to small sections of the treatment area. Each area is treated for approximately 10 to 20 minutes, and a full-face treatment may take 60 to 90 minutes. New skin develops after about two weeks, and you may have redness for several months after your deep medical facial.
